Fiorentina v Spurs – 7th August
Through the generosity of Tottenham Hotspur, a group of adults and players from CHLFC took advantage of free tickets to go and watch the aforementioned friendly.
I understand from Erich Zammer, the organiser, that everyone had a great day out. The icing on the cake came when Robbie Keane netted the winner in the last minute of the game.
Thank you Spurs for your generosity.
Community Shield – 8th August
Here I am on a train heading to London, this is the first time I have been on a train in years. In fact think there is a fault with this train as I haven’t seen any steam yet.
The reason I am on the train is that as a result of being selected as Cambs FA Volunteer of the Year, I was allocated two tickets to the Community Shield game between Manchester United and Chelsea. Also on the train with me are John and Jane Martin, Dan Joslin, Phil Hampshire and a young lad by the name of Reece Claydon.
Watch out for more blogs during the day. I just hope that there isn’t a blockage on this train preventing the steam spilling out of the funnel
Cambs FA Charter Standard Community Awards
I recently notified you of the accolade received by the club, by being voted as Cambs FA Development Club of the Year, and subsequently being chosen as Regional Development Club of the Year.
Well the Charter Standard Community Awards consist of eight categories, and I am proud to say that out of those eight categories, CHLFC have triumphed in three.
As previously mentioned we have won the Development Club of the year.
Well in addition to this 16 year old Shuggie Russell, who along with his mum Fiona, coaches and manages our girls team, has picked up the Young Volunteer of the Year Award. This award is thoroughly deserved, and bears testament to the way that Shuggie has coached these girls, and the vast improvement in their ability.
The third award picked up by the club, is that of Volunteer of the Year.
By attaining these awards it clearly shows that not only are we, as a club, doing things right, but we are recognised for what we all do and have achieved. Therefore as Chairman, I would like to congratulate everyone, committee members, managers and coaches, players and parents and all those ladies that do so much in the background, even though they have no children playing, for their continued help and support.
In closing I will just inform you that the recipients will be honoured, by having their awards presented to them at the Cambridge United home game on the 21st September.
Well done Lions
The Ivory Coast win the World Cup
Suprised at the headline, well I wasn’t. I am in fact talking about the Mini World Cup hosted by Cambs FA on Coldhams Common at the weekend.
Saturday saw the adults competing, then on Sunday the real action took place, the youngsters.
I am not aware of the statistics, but needless to say, as the headline states, the Ivory Coast, aka CHLFC Under 9, won their age group.
So, in the words of John Martin, ” it’s coming home ”
Well done, John, Amanda and the boys.
The Lions attain an accolade
I have received notification from The FA/McDonalds partnership to say that we have been chosen as Charter Standard Development Club of the region for the season 2009/2010.
For achieving this we will receive a framed certificate, a gift of some sort, plus we get to select £150.00 worth of equipment.
This award is testament to the dedication and hard work put into the club by the managers, officers and parents of this club. So as Chairman, I would like to say a big thank you and well done to you all, and let’s see if we can win it again next year.
Congratulations CHLFC Seniors
At the AGM of the VB Trophies Sunday League on Wednesday 9th June, we learned that our senior squad had gained promotion following their first season in the League.
Following a very slow start, the squad soon got used to playing together and started earning the points.
Under the direction of manager Lewis Owen, the squad have been promoted from division 3A up to 2A, very creditable for their inaugural season.
Well done boys . . . . . er, I mean men.
Lions just miss out
A very hard fought and evenly matched game saw both teams trying to gain the upper hand.
Good play throughout the team saw many chances created, and good work at the back kept Wood Lane at bay. Until in the dying minutes, the only girl player was given just a little too long on the ball. She took her chance to shoot, and squeezed the ball between the post and keeper, with the ball coming off both posts before ending up in the net.
There was barely time to restart the game before the final whistle blew.
Despite getting knocked out in the semi final, the day has been a great experience for the boys and all involved. Not many players get the opportunity to play on such a surface and in a venue like the Walkers Stadium, I think the memory will stay with th for quite a while.
The boys can also take pride in their performances, they were a credit to Warren and Dariusz and the club.
Lions reach semi final
Following their 1 – 0 win over Mawsley the boys are set to face Wood Lane Legion in the semi final.
Game three at Leicester
This game, against Mawsley, followed the same pattern as the previous two, with Lions having all the possession and hitting everything except the net.
But thankfully a well taken free kick by Josh, in the last couple of minutes, finally found the net, to give the boys their second 1 – 0 win of the day.
Game two at the Walker Stadium
After about an hour wait, the boys took the field for their second game.
This time the opposition were Pelican Boys, but the game was similar to the first one, with Lions having the majority of possession.
It looked as if this match too was destined to be a draw, until Byron picked up the ball and after a solo run, drove the ball into the bottom corner.
Lions 1 v 0 Pelican Boys
The Under 8 at the Walker Stadium
Saturday at some unearthly hour of the morning, I got up to join Warren, Dariusz and boys on their day at the home of Leicester City.
Topps Tiles, sponsor of the Under 8, host a tournament, at the Walker Stadium, for teams sponsored by the company.
The picture below shows the squad and supporters on their arrival at Leicester.
Want to get more involved with Cherry Hinton Lions ?
Do you have a few hours a month spare, and would like to get more involved with Cherry Hinton Lions, then please read on.
Cherry Hinton Lions are currently looking for volunteers to fill three administrative positions.
1) Minute Secretary – As the title says, this position requires a couple of hours on the first Tuesday evening of the month, to attend committee meetings and take the minutes.
Then the minutes would need typing up and circulating to club members prior to the next meeting.
No experience needed, just an ability to write, type and have a desire to help the club.
2) Volunteer Co-ordinator – once again this role is pretty self explanatory. All that is required is that the person in this position maintains a record of club personnel, and their relevant certificates and advises the individual when any certificates are due for re-certification.
Once again, no previous experience necessary, basically all you need is to be organised.
3) Welfare Officer – This position could entail dealing with sensitive issues, and as such would suit someone who currently works with children, either as a school teacher or in the medical profession. Initially they would have to undergo a CRB Disclosure and a couple of 3 hour workshops run by Cambs FA, namely Safeguarding Children and Welfare Officer workshops.
Hopefully this person, once qualified, will have nothing to do, in fact in the past 6 years our previous Welfare Officer has had only two trivial matters to deal with.
I sincerely hope that someone will come forward and undertake these positions. Anyone interested in either position, or knows someone who might be, please e-mail me at dave.heron@chlfc.co.uk
Many thanks, remember this club is for the community, so let’s have more community orientated members involved.
Change of date for End of Season event
I’m sorry to have to inform you, that due to circumstances beyond our control, the end of season event will be held on Sunday 27th June, not the 26th.
I apologise if this causes any problems with anyone, but unfortunately it has been unavoidable.
